Winter Truck Prep: 6 Things to Check Before the First Freeze

SMK Truck Repair • October 16, 2026

Chicago winters are hard on heavy trucks. A little prep in October saves a tow in January.

Cold weather is behind a lot of no-starts, frozen air lines and surprise breakdowns. Here are six things to check now, before the first freeze.

  1. Batteries and charging system. Cold weather cuts cranking power. Get batteries load-tested and cables cleaned before the first cold snap.
  2. Fuel and filters. Switch to winter-blend diesel or use an anti-gel additive, and replace fuel filters and water separators. A clogged filter is the most common cold-weather no-start.
  3. Air dryer and air system. Moisture in the air lines freezes and can lock up your brakes. Service the air dryer, replace the cartridge if it's due, and drain the tanks.
  4. Coolant. Check freeze protection and look for leaks at hoses and the radiator.
  5. Aftertreatment and DEF. DEF freezes around 12°F. Make sure the tank heater works, and don't ignore DPF or regen warnings. Short winter runs make clogs more likely.
  6. Tires, lights and wipers. Check tread and pressure (it drops in the cold), replace worn wiper blades, and make sure every light works. Lights are one of the most common DOT inspection violations.
